Niclaus Till - Emigration Report

Den 26. dieses Monats habe die Ehre gehabt denen-
selbigen wegen Niclaus Schneider den nöthigen
Bericht zu überschreiben, da aber seithero noch
drey andere in gedancken naher West-Indien
seeglende, namlich Niclaus Till, Hanß Joner vnd
Hanß Buser entdecket alß habe empfangener
ordre gemäß dieselbe heüt morgen in Beyseyn
des Untervogts besprochen vnd beygehend derselben
Aussag Meinen Hochgeacht vnd HochgeEh. H.
Deputaten gehorsamst übersenden wollen.

Womit nebst erlassung in den Schutz
des allerhöchsten mit Tieffestem Respect
die Ehre habe zu verbleiben.

Special great masters High Honorable Gentlemen!

The 26th of this month we had the honour to
bring to your attention the report on Niclaus
Schneider, however since then still
three others thinking further on West Indian
sailing namely Niclaus Till, Hanß Joner and
Hanß Buser discover as if more received order
discussed the same this morning in the presence of
the Untervogts and states the same my Hochgeacht and HochgeEh. H. Payments in kind obediently to send want.

With which together with issuing into the protection
of the most high this with deepest Respect
the honour has to remain.

Den 31. Jenner 1736 sind nachstehende Bürger
von Prattelen in dasigem Pfarrhauß
      verhöret worden.

1. Niclaus Till, seines Alters 41 Jahr
Befragt: Ob er das Land zu verlassen gesinnet seye?
Antw.: Ja, er erwarte jedernoch noch gewüßeren
Bericht von Purybourg(?).
Befragt Auß waß Ursachen er solches im Sinn habe?
Antw. Er seye ein Leinenweber und nehme der arbeit
täglich ab; sie werde auch von Tag zu Tag
schlechter bezahlt und über das werde von Basel
auß gar viel arbeit in das Sundgow gegeben
Er habe starcke Famille und viel Schulden.

2. Hanß Joner, 49 Jahr alt.
Befragt: Ob er auch vorhabe auß dem Land zu ziehen?
Antw. Er seye gäntzlich gesinnet auff den Frühling
in Pensylvaniam zu gehen.
Befragt Warumb er solches thun wolle?
Antw. Seine Sach gehe zuruck und hoffe er sie in
Pensylvania weit besser als hier zu machen; er
habe deßhalben sicheren und gewüssen Bericht.
Er habe im Sinn seine Schulden ehrlich zu
bezahlen und hoffe im übrigen es werde eine
vätterliche Obrigkeit ihme seinen geringen
Fürschuß gnädigst abfolgen lassen.

3. Hanß Buser 38 Jahr alt
Befragt Ob er in Carolinam zu gehen gedencke?
Antw. Ja mit der Hülffe Gottes.
Befragt Waß ihne dazu bewege?
Antw. Er könne hierzuland nicht mehr fortkommen
und wüsse es nicht zu erschwingen sich zu
erhalten und seinen Creditoribus zu begegnen.
Es seye ihme schon gar offt dazu gekommen
daß er mit hungeringem Bauch ohne ein Stückh
Brodt zu haben, habe frohnen müssen.

The 31. January 1736 the following residentss
of Prattelen in the rectory
      were interrogated.

1. Niclaus Till, his age 41 years
Ask: Whether he intends to leave the country?
Ans.: Yes, he expects even now
news from Purrysburg.
Ask: For what reason will he leave here?
Ans. He is a linen weaver and his work declines
every day; He is paid also from day to day
more poorly and, besides that, from Basel
much work is given to the Sundgow.
He has a large family and many debts.

2. Hanß Joner, 49 years old.
Asked: Whether he also intend to leave the country?
Ans. He is entirely committed in the spring
to go to Pensylvania.
Asked: Why does he want to do that?
Ans. His luck has gone bad and he hopes it in
Pensylvania will be better than here to make; he
has received reliable news of that.
He intends his legitimate debts to
pay and hopes in all other respects it becomes the
fatherly authorities to him his small
allowance mercifully to have

3. Hanß Buser 38 years old
Asked: Whether he intends to go to Carolina?
Ans. With the Help of God.
Asked: What induces him to it?
Ans. This country no more progresses
and he knows he cannot afford himself to
keep and his creditors to meet.
It often happens to him
that he with hungry belly without a stick
of bread to have, forced to beg.

The Sundgow is a region in the southern part of Alsace. Niclaus is complaining that Basel is sending a lot of weaving work there.
